MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State pounded out 16 hits and scored in each of the first four innings as it swept the series over Mississippi Valley State with an 8-2 victory at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex Sunday afternoon.
Alabama State (6-10, 3-3 SWAC) scored a pair of runs in the first inning to take the early lead when
Cristopher DeGuzman singled to center to score
Trenton Jamison and
Abner Benitez for the 2-0 lead. After Mississippi Valley State added a run of their own in the second to trim the lead to 2-1, Alabama State answered with a pair to extend the lead to three when Benitez tripled to right to score
Hunter May and
Angel Jimenez.
The Delta Devils added a run in the third to trim the lead in half to 4-2, but Alabama State used an RBI single by Jimenez to score
Santiago Garcia.
Leading 5-2 in the fourth, Alabama State scored the final three runs of the game beginning with a
Jayden Sloan bunt single to score May after a throwing error to push the lead to 6-2. They added another on a Benitez double to score Sloan, and the final on an RBI double by
Chris Lewis.
Benitez finished 3-for-5 with three runs batted in on three extra base hits, while Jamison finished 3-for-4 and May 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Garcia and Jimenez each picked up a pair of hits for the Hornets in the win.
Britt Buckelew (1-1) picked up the win in relief of starter
Jordan Gould, going 6.0 innings and scattering five hits and striking out eight.
Ryan Velazquez came in to record the final two outs, with the final coming on a strikeout.
