MONTGOMERY, Ala. |Â Alabama State put up double digit runs in both games on Saturday, winning 10-9 and 11-1 to complete the weekend sweep of Alcorn State.
Alabama State 10, Alcorn State 9
After giving up three early runs through the first two innings, Alabama State (8-11, 5-3 SWAC) responded by scoring two runs of their own in the bottom of the second.
Hunter May started the scoring for the Hornets, knocking out a solo home run in his first at bat, followed by a triple from Dilan Espinol who later scored on a single from
Jabronski Williams to reduce the deficit to 3-2.
Alcorn State extended their lead by adding three more runs in the fourth, before
Abner Benitez tripled to right field and was brought home by
AJ Gardner in the bottom of the frame to head into the fifth down 6-3.
The Braves added another run in the fifth and two more in the sixth inning, while the Hornets continued to claw back with two scores in the bottom of the seventh. Williams started off the inning with a triple to center and scored on a single from
Trenton Jamison, while Jamison scored the second run of the frame after
Chris Lewis brought in the run with a double.
Alabama State continued their rally in the eighth, finding the bases loaded for Williams who knocked in two runs on a single to left. Later in the frame Espinol scored on a passed ball, followed by another score from Williams to tie the game.
The Hornets scored their tenth and final run of the game after
Santiago Garcia tripled to center to bring home
Cristopher DeGuzman.
Williams led Alabama State in game one going 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs score. Three other Hornets gained at least two hits in the game, including May who hit his first home run of the year.
Britt Buckelew (2-1) picked up the win in relief after pitching 4.2 innings and allowing six hits and three runs on the day.
Breon Pooler started and worked for 3.1 innings, allowing eight hits and four earned runs and three strikeouts.
Ryan Velazquez earned the save after closing out the Braves in the final inning.
Alabama State 11, Alcorn State 1 (7 Inn.)
After a scoreless first, Alabama State (9-11, 6-3 SWAC) scored seven runs on just one hit in the second to break the game open, a lead that would not be overcome by the Braves.
The Hornets scored their first two runs after five consecutive walks, and scored their third on a passed ball at the plate.
Trenton Jamison helped add to the lead with a single to right field to bring in two more runs, while
Jabronski Williams scored during the next at bat on a wild pitch. Alabama State would score their final run of the inning off a sacrifice fly from
Chris Lewis, scoring Jamison.
After Alcorn State got on the board in the fifth, Alabama State added four more runs in the seventh, the first being a score by
Cristopher DeGuzman off a single from
Santiago Garcia followed by a score from Lewis on a passed ball. Garcia later scored off a single from
AJ Gardner and pinch runner
Kenny Allred scored the game ending run off a single from
Hunter May for the 11-1 final.
Gardner went a perfect 3-for-3 in game two along with a RBI and a run scored. Jamison accounted for two hits, two RBI and a run scored, while four other Hornets earned hits, including May who knocked in two RBI as well.
Jordan Gould (3-0) picked up the win for the Hornets with 5.0 innings of work and struck out four while giving up just a single run off three hits on the afternoon.
Osvaldo Mendez came in for relief for the final two innings and struck out three without giving up a hit.
Alabama State returns to action next week as they travel to Tallahassee, Florida to face off against Florida A&M in a midweek matchup at the Moore-Kittles Baseball Complex on Tuesday.
