MONTGOMERY, Ala. |Â Alabama State fell 6-1 and 5-4 in a doubleheader Saturday to conclude three-game series against Southern in Baton Rouge.
Southern 6, Alabama State 1
After winning the first matchup of the series, Alabama State (6-18, 2-3
SWAC) struggled in day two of the weekend against Southern, finding themselves trailing 5-0 after the first three innings.
The Hornets scored their lone run in the fifth with a home run by
Kaley Anthony to right center, the only hit of the game for Alabama State.
Madison Myers (6-7) picked up the loss in game one for the Hornets, putting in 1.1 innings of work and gave up two hits and two runs on the day.
Skyler Sullivan came in for relief to pitch 3.2 innings, and allowed four run off of eight hits, while
Vanessa Bradford pitched the final inning.
Southern 5, Alabama State 4
Southern jumped out to an early lead in the second game, scoring four runs in the first inning.
Alabama State (6-19, 2-4
SWAC) got on the board in the fourth after Anthony scored off a single from
Kindall DeRamus and added another three in the sixth to attempt the comeback.
Alex Massie brought home Myers for the first run of the inning, while DeRamus doubled to bring home Anthony and later scored herself off a single from
Jamaica Flowers to reduce the deficit to 5-4.
Anthony, DeRamus and Myers all had two hits apiece for the Hornets, with Anthony also scoring two runs and DeRamus adding two RBI and a run scored. Bradford picked up the loss, allowing five runs off four hits in her six innings.
Alabama State returns to action next week as they host North Alabama in a midweek matchup at the
Barbara Williams Softball Complex on Tuesday.
