Alabama State ends weekend with win over Texas Southern, remains undefeated in conference play

HOUSTON, Texas | A penalty kick in the 83rd minute Sunday helped Alabama State (5-2-1, 5-0-1 SWAC) defeat Texas Southern on the road, 1-0, and continue their unbeaten streak in conference play.

"I was very pleased with our effort and desire to compete in a difficult place to play," Alabama State head coach Jodie Smith said. "We really had to grind out the win today with the weather and windy conditions and performed well. Our next step is turning our focus to Alabama A&M to close out our regular season on a high note."

After a corner kick from Teaggan Ilela, a Texas Southern foul gave McKenna Lupori a penalty kick which she scored to give the Hornets the 1-0 win. The goal was the third for Lupori on the year.

The Lady Hornets were able to get off seven shots on goal against the Tigers, with three coming from Ilela and four others who shot one each. Meanwhile, Madison Roop recorded her second consecutive shutout and fourth of the season with two saves.

Alabama State returns to play Friday afternoon as they host Alabama A&M for their final test of the regular season. The match is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
