JACKSON, Miss. | Alabama State fell in the regular season finale to Jackson State 64-62 at the Lee E. Williams Athletic and Assembly Center in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play Saturday afternoon.
But the finish wasn't without controversy in the final minute of the contest.
Jackson State took a three-point lead on a pair of free throws by J'Niya Tallie with 53 seconds to play, taking a 60-57 lead. Alabama State came right back on a lay-up by
Ayana Emmanuel to trim the deficit to 60-59. The Lady Tigers came right back with a lay-up to take a 62-59 lead with 20 second remaining.
And that is when things got crazy.
Alabama State came right back, and
Jayla Crawford drained a three-pointer from the right wing over Ameshya Williams with just 14 seconds remaining to tie the game at 62-all. However, the scoreboard reflected an extra point for Jackson State (63-62) after the three-pointer was made leading to a foul by
Shmya Ward – her fifth of the game- and Jackson State hit one of two free throws to take a one-point lead with just 10.3 seconds remaining. The Tigers added one more free throw to clinch the win with less than a second remaining.
Jayla Crawford led Alabama State (14-3) with 20 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the floor, while Ward finished with another double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
Farrah Pearson added 11 off the bench and
Ayana Emmanuel finished with 10 in the win for the Lady Hornets who finished the night shooting 31.3 (21-for-67) percent from the floor and 41.2 (7-for-17) percent from beyond the arc.
Alabama State returns to action in the first round of the SWAC Women's Basketball Championship Tournament in Birmingham on Wednesday, March 10. The official bracket will be released at the conclusion of all of the regular season games by the conference office.
