MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State dropped the final game of a three-game series to Jackson State 4-3 Sunday afternoon at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action.
Alabama State (1-8, 0-3 SWAC) was able to jump on the board in the first inning on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Angel Jimenez that scored
Cameron Hearn with the game's first run. However, Jackson State answered with four unanswered including a pair in the third to take a 4-1 lead.
The Hornets were able to trim the lead to 4-2 on a sacrifice fly from
Trenton Jamison that scored Hearn in the fifth and added another in the ninth on an RBI single from Hearn to score
Abner Benitez to pull Alabama State to within one before the final out was made.
Osvaldo Mendez (0-1) suffered the loss in the start, working 3.2 innings and allowed four runs (only one earned) on four hits while striking out five. He gave way to
Jordan Gould and
Payton Harris who combined to hold Jackson State scoreless over the next 5.1 innings of work.
Alabama State pounded out 10 hits in the loss, led by Hearn who finished 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored, while
Cristopher DeGuzman added a pair of hits.
The series sweep marks the first time that Jackson State has swept Alabama State since the 2017 season, and marks just the fourth time since 2016 that either time has recorded a sweep with the Hornets sweeping the season series in 2016.
Alabama State returns to action Wednesday against Samford with first pitch scheduled for 6 pm at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex. Only those listed on the player pass list will be admitted into the venue due to socially distant seating. Alabama State is a mask mandatory campus, as are each of the athletic venues.
