MONTGOMERY, Ala. I Alabama State (9-22, 4-5 SWAC) split Sunday's doubleheader against conference foe Jackson State to secure the 2-1 series win at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex on Sunday afternoon.
Alabama State 9, Jackson State 5
Both teams started out hot at the plate as Jackson State opened the game by scoring three in the top of the first off a three-run homer. Alabama State responded in the bottom half of the inning after
Alex Massie singled to right field to score
Madison Myers,
Jazmine Dodd brought home
Jaeda Gardner on a groundout and
Kaley Anthony singled to bring in Massie to tie the game at 3-3.
The Hornets took the lead in the second after Gardner singled to gain her second RBI of the contest, however the Tigers added two runs in the third frame to retake the lead.
Alabama State tied the ball game at 5-5 in the bottom of the third with a single from
Jamaica Flowers to score Dodd, and added two more runs in the fifth to take a 7-5 lead.
In the bottom sixth, Anthony doubled down the left field line to bring home Dodd, and later scored herself on an infield single from
Destinee Dixon for the final run of the game.
The Hornets pounded out 16 hits in the game, with Anthony leading the way going 4-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scores followed by Dodd who added three hits, an RBI and three scores.
Skyler Sullivan (9-8) picked up her second win of the series Alabama State after pitching a complete game and giving up just five hits and struck out eight on the day.
Jackson State 8, Alabama State 5
Jackson State opened the scoring in game two with two runs in the second, however Alabama State added a run in the bottom half of the inning when Dodd crossed the plate on an error.
After giving up a run in the third, the Hornets scored in the fourth inning off a sacrifice fly to left from
Kat McGlamry to put the score at 3-2.
The Tigers broke the game open in the fifth, scoring five runs in the top half, before Alabama State closed the gap by adding three of their own.
Kindall DeRamus brought home two runs with a triple to left field and later scored on a single from Dodd on the next at bat.
Gardner led the Hornets in game two with three hits and a run scored, while Dodd and Myers each recorded two hits each.
Vanessa Bradford (0-6) picked up the loss for the Hornets, working 5.0 innings and giving up eight runs off of eight hits and striking out seven.
Madison Myers came in for relief, working 2.0 innings and giving up just one hit on the day.
Alabama State will return to the field on Tuesday April 13, as they face Auburn in a mid-week matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 5 pm.
