Alabama State defeats Alabama A&M to advance to SWAC Tennis Championship

NEW ORLEANS, La. | Top seeded Alabama State swept fourth seeded Alabama A&M 4-0 on Sunday morning in the semifinal round of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tennis Championships.

Alabama State (8-6, 6-1 SWAC) picked up its first win of the tournament after receiving a first round bye.

The Lady Hornets picked up the doubles point with a win from the pairing of Madalena Andrade and Francesca Duca 6-1, followed by a win from Urska Velec and Bea Acena 6-2 at number three.

They then swept through singles play picking up wins in three of the singles matches, two of which were straight sets. Acena won the first match at five with scores of 6-3, 6-2, followed by Andrade who won 7-5, 6-3 at number one. Lizaveta Demchenko finished off the sweep at number three winning in three sets (0-6, 6-1, 6-3).

Alabama State returns to action on Monday, April 19 in the final round of the SWAC Tennis Championships in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Hornets will face the winner of Jackson State and Prairie View.
