NEW ORLEANS, La. | Alabama State women's tennis captured the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament Championship and secured a spot to the NCAA Tournament after a 4-1 win over Jackson State on Monday morning.
Alabama State (9-6, 6-1 SWAC) dominated the day, losing just two matches combined for the victory. In doubles play,
Urska Velec and
Bea Acena won at number three 6-3, followed by
Madalena Andrade and
Francesca Duca took number two (7-6).
Lizaveta Demchenko and
Ana Tarbujaru dropped the lone set for the Hornets in doubles play at court one by a score of 6-4.
The Hornets took three of four pairings in the singles, including two in straight sets with Duca winning 6-2, 6-3 at number four and Velec taking court two with scores of 6-1, 6-2, while Andrade won in three sets (3-6, 6-2, 6-2) to capture the win.
Velec and Andrade both earned All-Tournament Team honors, with Andrade being named Tournament MVP along with head coach
Anuk Christiansz being named Coach of the Year.
Selections for the 2021 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Tennis Championships will be announced at 6 pm eastern time for the women's team selections and at 6:30 pm for the men's team selections, Monday May 3, via web stream on the NCAA website. Individual singles and doubles selections will be released by 6 pm eastern time, Tuesday, May 4, also on the NCAA website.
