MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The Alabama State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics celebrated their student-athletes on Monday inside ASU Stadium with the year-end Stingers.

Four teams were recognized for their efforts off the field and in the classroom with the Best GPA for both small team and big team. The tennis programs swept the Small Team GPA awards on the men's and women's sides. Meanwhile, the women's soccer team – on the road at the NCAA Championships – was awarded the Big Team Female GPA award, while the baseball team was the awarded the Big Team Male GPA.

The women's soccer team also won the Moment of the Year Award, edging out three other athletic events to take home the prize, after winning the SWAC Championship against Grambling State on penalty kicks.

After the teams were honored, the department recognized long-time employee Diane Brisbon with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Brisbon, who served 31-plus years at Alabama State, started her career in the Education Department in 1975 before moving over to athletics in the early '80s with Dr. Tommy Frederick. She currently serves a role as an administrative secretary in the department.

The awards show closed with the final award of the night – the Unsung Hero Award – a new award established this year following COVID-19. Things changed in March 2020 and many in the department assumed new responsibilities from COVID testing to game changes to multiple teams in action on the same day. For their efforts, the Athletic Training staff was rewarded with the initial Unsung Hero award.
