CARY, N.C. | Alabama State had their season come to an end in the opening round of the 2020 Division I Women's Soccer Championship, falling to regular season Big 10 champion Penn State 5-0 at WakeMed Park Wednesday night.
Freshman
Madison Roop, the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Goalkeeper of the Year, proved why throughout the match with 11 saves including a few from point blank range. The freshman faced 16 shots on goal in the match from Penn State (11-2-1), while also facing nine corner kicks.
Penn State got on the board in the 17th minute, finally pushing a ball past Roop who had four brilliant saves in the first seven minutes. Frankie Tagliaferri was able to score the first of her back-to-back goals on an assist from Payton Linnehan, before she scored her second goal of the match and ninth on the year in the 25th minute for a 2-0 lead.
They would add another in the 27th minute, before closing out the scoring in the first half on a goal by Olivia Damico in the 32nd minute for the 4-0 lead at the break.
The Lady Hornets came out in the second half with multiple chances including a shot by
McKenna Wiscombe that rolled across the mouth of the goal, and another by
Grace Norbury that was saved by Penn State keeper Katherine Asman. The Nittany Lions were able to get on the board in the 73rd minute on an own goal for the final margin.
Alabama State (9-3-1) entered the tournament on a 10-match unbeaten streak and were in the same bracket with the regular season Big 10 champion, the ACC champion and No. 1 seed Florida State and SEC champion and No. 16 seed Vanderbilt. The Lady Hornets close out the year
The Lady Hornets made their third appearance in the last five years in the tournament, while Penn State moves on to face Vanderbilt in the second round later this week,
