MONTGOMERY, Ala. I Alabama State fell to Jacksonville State 14-10 despite earning 17 hits on Wednesday afternoon at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.
After Jacksonville State opened the game by scoring a run in the first inning,
Santiago Garcia brought in
Jabronski Williams for a score followed by a single from
Abner Benitez to score
Trenton Jamison gave Alabama State (12-14) a 2-1 lead.
The Gamecocks retook the lead with three scores in the top second, however the Hornets responded once more with an RBI double from Jamison who later scored off a single to center from
Cristopher DeGuzman to tie the ball game 4-4.
Jacksonville State broke the game open over the next two innings, scoring two in both the fourth and the fifth to gain an 8-4 lead before Jamison singled to right field to bring home
Dale Francis for a score.
The Gamecocks tacked on three more runs in the top half of the seventh to extend their lead to 13-5, however the Hornets closed the gap by adding four runs in the bottom half of the eighth. DeGuzman started off the rally by bringing in
Jayden Sloan, followed by a double from
Hunter May to left to bring in two more scores. May scored the final run of the inning later off a single from
AJ Gardner to pull the Hornets within four.
Gardner and Williams led Alabama State at the plate, each pounding out three hits, with Williams adding three scores and Gardner knocking in a run. Jamison added two hits, two RBI and two runs scored, while DeGuzman also added two hits, a run scored and two RBI in the game.
Austin King (2-2) picked up the loss for Alabama State, facing 21 batters in his 3.0 innings of work and allowing six runs off of eight hits. Six other Hornet pitchers made an appearance on the day, as the unit gave up 19 hits on the day.
Alabama State returns to action this weekend as they travel to Jackson State for a three-game series beginning on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 pm.
