Alabama State scores five first half goals, cruises to opening round win at the SWAC Tournament Thursday

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas | Top-seeded Alabama State wasted little time in getting on the board in their quarterfinal contest against No. 8 seed Alcorn State and cruised to a 6-1 victory Thursday morning.

Alabama State (7-2-1) ran their unbeaten streak to eight matches after a five-goal first half that started with a goal from Teaggan Ilela just one minute into the match to give the Lady Hornets a 1-0 lead. After Rosalina Santoro scored the equalizer in the 15th minute, Alabama State answered with three goals over the next five minutes to extend their lead.

"Great job by our team today," Alabama State head coach Jodie Smith said. "We talked about coming out fast and we definitely did. It is nice to get the first one, now we have to turn our focus to the semifinal and another tough opponent."

McKenna Wiscombe put Alabama State ahead 2-1 with a goal in the 16th minute, before Ilela added her second goal in the 19th minute for a 3-1 lead. The lead grew to three on a goal in the 21st minute from Paige Patton before the Lady Hornets added another right before half off the foot of Kaitlyn Simpson for a 5-1 lead.

Ashley Thomas scored the lone second half goal for either team in the 72nd minute for the final margin.

Alabama State will face the winner of No. 4 seed Jackson State Friday afternoon at 3 pm.
