Lorman, Miss. | Alabama State (19-17, 11-7 SWAC) picked up both games of a Saturday doubleheader, 12-3 and 3-0, to complete the three-game sweep at Alcorn State.
Alabama State 12, Alcorn State 3
After a shutout on Friday night, Alcorn State got on the board first on Saturday with three runs in the bottom of the second inning; however, they would fail to score for the remainder of the game.
Jabronski Williams singled to left to bring home
Jayden Sloan for the first run for Alabama State in the top of the third, while
Dilan Espinal recorded an RBI single in the fourth to make the score 3-2.
The Hornets tied the game at three in the fifth after
Hunter May singled up the middle to score
Cristopher DeGuzman and proceeded to break the game open in the last two innings, scoring two in the eighth and seven in the ninth to close out the 12-3 win.
Alabama State pounded out 16 hits in the game with DeGuzman and Espinal both going 3-for-4 at the plate, with DeGuzman adding three scores and Espinal adding a score and an RBI of his own. Williams went 3-for-5 to go along with two RBI in the game.
Payton Harris (3-1) picked up the win for the Hornets in relief, working 4.0 innings and holding the Braves scoreless and allowing just one hit and striking out five, while
Jeremy Rivera started the game, pitching 4.0 innings and giving up three runs off six hits to go along with seven strike outs.
Alabama State 3, Alcorn State 0
In the second game of the doubleheader, both teams were held scoreless for the first three innings before Alabama State got on the board in the third after May recorded an RBI double down the left field line to bring home DeGuzman in the top of the fourth.
The Hornets added to their lead with another run in the sixth with an unearned run off a fielder's choice play and gained the 3-0 win after an RBI double from
Santiago Garcia to score
Trenton Jamison in the eighth.
May led Alabama State from the plate in game two, going 2-for-3 with an RBI, while DeGuzman and Garcia recorded the only other two hits of the game.
Osvaldo Mendez (2-2) picked up the win for the Hornets after working 5.2 innings on the mound and surrendering just three hits and striking out five batters.
Britt Buckelew picked up the save after pitching the final 3.1 innings and giving up four hits to go along with four strikeouts.
