MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State followed up a season-high 17 runs in Friday's game with another double figure hitting performance as they secured the series win with a 9-3 victory over Alabama A&M on Saturday afternoon.
After struggling to score in the opening game of the series, Alabama A&M started the game strong, putting up three runs in the top half of the first inning off of three hits.
Alabama State (22-17, 13-7 SWAC) responded in the bottom half of the frame and loaded the bases after an error and two singles, before
Hunter May hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring in the first run. On the next at bat,
Chris Lewis tripled to right field, driving in both
Cristopher DeGuzman and
Trenton Jamison to score to tie the ball game at 3-3.
In the second, the Hornets added two more runs to take a 5-3 lead, as
Jabronski Williams hit an RBI double down the right field line to score
Dilan Espinal for the first run, while Williams scored on the next at bat on a throwing error.
Alabama State added to their lead in the sixth after
Dilan Espinal scored the first run of the inning on a throwing error, followed by a single from Jamison up the middle to drive in two more runs. Lewis drove in the final run of the inning after a sacrifice fly to right field to score Jamison to give the Hornets a 9-3 lead.
Four Alabama State batters earned two hits each on the day, with Jamison adding two scores and three RBI, while Williams added three scores and two RBI to his totals.
Jeremy Rivera (2-0) started on the mound for Alabama State, working 6.0 innings and allowing three runs on four hits to go along with his four strikeouts. Ryan Valazquez pitched the remaining 3.0 innings in relief and picked up the save after not giving up a hit and striking out four batters.
The two teams will play for the final time on Sunday afternoon to conclude the three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 1 pm at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.
