Alabama State falls to Troy, 3-2, in exhibition action

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State battled back from a three goal deficit in the opening half, falling to Troy 3-2 in exhibition action at the ASU Soccer Complex Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Troy scored first in the 39th minute on a cross from Sage Prince to Taytum Terrell to take an early 1-0 lead, before they added another goal just 30 seconds later on a penalty kick.
  • The Trojans added another goal right before intermission from Prince in the 44th minute for a 3-0 lead.
  • Alabama State got on the board in the 70th minute on a goal by Isabella Beortegui (Santa Ana, Calif.), beating the keeper in the upper 90 to trim the lead to 3-1.
  • Beortegui added another goal in the 88th minute on an assist from Paige Patton (Kent, Wash.) to trim the lead to 3-2.
GAME NOTES
  • Alabama State started four newcomers in the exhibition contest including MF Katherine Nedved (Chandler, Ariz.), MF Camila Jimenez (Weston, Fla.), D Madison Tyler (Maricopa, Ariz.), GK Sheila Sanchez (Castellon, Spain).
  • The Lady Hornets also started F Kassandra Schoen (St. Michaels, Minn.), F McKenna Wiscombe (Orem, Utah), F Beortegui, MF Grace Norbury (Melbourne, Australia), D Kristin Thomas (Watkinsville, Ga.), D Kayleigh O'Neal (San Diego, Calif.), D Patton.
  • The match was originally scheduled to be played in Troy but was moved to Montgomery after Troy began work on the Soccer Complex.
  • Alabama State begins the year with 11 newcomers, including both goalkeepers.
  • The Lady Hornets played without returners Mary Martin Mooneyham (Montgomery, Ala.) and Janae Brown (Orlando, Fla.).
UP NEXT
Alabama State opens the regular season on the road against Winthrop on August 20 (Friday) on the road, before finishing off the opening trip against Presbyterian on August 22 (Sunday).
