Former Alabama State basketball player Nia Sapp hosts Nike series "Come Thru"

Described as a show "for her, by her", Nike's latest web series Come Thru debuted its first episode in March 2021. Hosted by Nia Symone (Sapp), a former Alabama State women's basketball player, the show's first episode focused Black women in business and featured conversations with Shelly Bell (Black Girl Ventures founder and CEO), A'ja Wilson (Las Vegas Aces MVP), and Olamide Olowe (Topicals CEO and founder).

However, the path for Sapp was not always the easiest.

The Atlanta-native began her Division I career playing at the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, before transferring to Alabama State University. She would end her career with the Lady Hornets following the 2017-18 season to focus on her professional career in communications.

She spent her final year of college working with Alabama State in communications department, as well as interning with WSFA spearheaded by Shani Crayton – also an instructor at Alabama State.

"The department and the internship both shaped and molded what I am today," Sapp said. "It also opened doors for other opportunities."

Other opportunities for Sapp included working with Lester Holt of NBC Nightly News when the crew visited Montgomery in the Fall of 2018. After that, she went out on a limb that many would not and moved back to Atlanta to search for other opportunities.

"I didn't have any plans when I left Alabama State," Sapp said. "I applied everywhere. It didn't matter what it was, it could have been news or sports."

Then the call came.

Her first opportunity came with 11 Alive News in Atlanta on a part-time basis, working as an intern in the sports department. While there, she parlayed into a freelance opportunity with NBA-TV, editing footage and highlights as an associate producer, and with CNN.

"The NABJ conference was in Miami," Sapp said. "I had the opportunity to go to the conference and met a lot of different people in the business. That is when I met the people who led me to an opportunity to work Overtime."

Although she was active on social media throughout the process, she began a re-branding of sorts and using her platform in sports. While doing so, she was mentioned by a friend to the folks at Nike who were looking to interview former student-athletes.

And the rest is history.

You can catch Sapp on the Nike app through Google Play and the App Store, or by searching Come Thru on YouTube.
