BUIES CREEK, N.C. | Alabama State fell 3-1 to host school Campbell in their final match of the four-team Fairfield Inn and Suites Dunn Campbell Invitational in the Gilbert Craig Gore Arena on Saturday morning.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After an opening ace from setter McKenzie Boland (Stockbridge, Ga.), Campbell University scored four unanswered to take an early 4-1 lead.
  • The Hornets responded with a run of their own led by two kills from Jada Rhodes (Tallahassee, Fla.) to put the score at 6-5.
  • The two teams traded runs over the next few minutes, with Campbell clawing out to a four-point lead three times, before extending their lead to 19-11.
  • Campbell continued to control momentum; however, Alabama State went on a five-point run after trailing 24-15 but fell 25-20 in the opening set.
  • Set two started in a similar fashion, with the Hornets scoring the first point again before the teams traded runs, with Alabama State taking an 8-5 lead.
  • Campbell tied the ball game at 13-13 later, however found themselves trailing again 16-13 after a run from the Hornets that included another two kills from Rhodes.
  • Alabama State continued their strong play in the set, never surrendering their lead and taking the second set of the match 25-22.
  • Both teams continued to battle in the third, with both going on runs but neither team gaining a significant edge.
  • With the score tied at 14-14, Campbell went on a 4-1 run to gain a lead they would not give up, continuing to hold off Alabama State comeback efforts, taking the set 25-22.
  • In the fourth and final set, Campbell took an early 5-3 lead, and went up 10-7 moments later.
  • After Alabama State pulled back within three points after a key block and kill from Kalysia Bates (Phenix City, Ala.) to put the score at 15-12, Campbell went on another run this time to clinch the match with a score of 25-16.
