MONTGOMERY, Ala. |Â Alabama State and head coach
Freda Freeman-Jackson rebounded after a home loss on Saturday by blowing out Alcorn State 74-39 on Monday evening inside the Dunn-Oliver Acadome in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) game.

After the two teams battled with a close first quarter, Alabama State (4-9, 3-1 SWAC) held Alcorn State to two consecutive single digit quarters in the second and third to break the game open. The Hornets outscored the Braves 23-8 in the second to head into the locker room at halftime up 40-23.

The third was also a big quarter for Alabama State as they pushed their lead to 30 points, holding the Braves to just five points in ten minutes before closing out the game.

Alabama State finished the game shooting 49.2 (29-of-59) percent from the floor, 35.3 (6-of-17) percent from three and 66.7 (10-of-15) percent from the free throw line. They held Alcorn State to just 23.7 (14-of-59) percent shooting from the field and 10.3 (3-of-29) percent from three, for the Hornets best defensive performance of the season.

All but one Hornet scored in the contest, including three double digit scorers led by
Shmya Ward (Memphis, Tenn.) with 18 points on 9-of-11 shooting along with six rebounds and three assists.
Jayla Crawford (Birmingham, Ala.) added 14 points and two steals, while
Ayana Emmanuel (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) added 13 points and four rebounds on the night.

Diamond Hall was the lone double-digit scorer for the Braves with 10 points along with six steals.

Alabama State will return to play this weekend as they host rival Alabama A&M on January 15 for their third straight home game. Game time is scheduled for 2 pm, with the men following. All fans entering the arena must provide a negative COVID test within 72 hours and must wear masks at all times.
