Alabama State set to open 2022 season on the road at Samford

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Four-time defending Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) champion Alabama State opens the 2022 season on Saturday against in-state foe Samford on the road in Birmingham.

Alabama State (9-7 last season) returns much of its roster from the championship team in 2021 including All-Tournament performer Urska Velec (Maribor, Slovenia). The senior is the lone player on this year's team to have played against Samford, winning both of her matches back in the last meeting between the two teams on March 2, 2019. She teamed with Reka Szentes for a 6-4 win at number two doubles, before winning her singles match at number six (3-6, 6-4, 6-4).

The two have met two times since 2018 with Samford winning both including 4-3 (March 2, 2019) 5-2 (April 5, 2018).

The match is scheduled for 1:30 pm at the Pat M. Courington Tennis Pavilion.
