@BamaStateWBB Falls Short in Season Opener to SMU

DALLAS, Texas | Senior guard Jayla Crawford (Birmingham, Ala.) led the Lady Hornets with 12 points but the scoring effort was not enough as Alabama State women's basketball team fell short to the Southern Methodist Mustangs, 76-39, inside Moody Coliseum in Dallas, Texas.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Samya Brooks scored ASU's first points but SMU ended the first quarter with a 20-4 advantage.
  • The Lady Hornets scored 12 second quarter points to cut the deficit to 42-16 heading into the intermission.
  • ASU continued to fight back after ending the third quarter down 59-29 
  • Alabama State scored 10 points in the fourth quarter but SMU held on to win, 76-39, in the 2022 season opener.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
  • Alabama State shot 14-for-53 from the field, 2-for-16 from three, and 9-for-19 from the charity stripe.
  • Jayla Crawford led the Lady Hornets in scoring with 12 points on 4-for-11 shooting from the field and 20 percent (1-for-5) from three-point land.
  • Freshman Ryin Tillis showed a promising future in her first game with eight points and two rebounds in her ASU debut.
  • Ayana Emmanuel and Cordasia Harris finished with six points each followed by three points from Ashley Gray and two apiece from Samiya Steele and Samya Brooks.
  • Samiya Steele led Alabama State in assists after handing out four helpers in the season opener.
