Alabama State concludes opening weekend play at Stinger Classic

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State (2-2) split a doubleheader on to close out the weekend falling to Austin Peay 6-1, before defeating the College of Charlseton 3-1 at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Austin Peay State 6, Alabama State 1
In a rematch of Friday evening's matchup, Bailey Greenlee (Snohomish, Wash.) started on the mound for the Hornets and pitched three scoreless innings to start the game.

Austin Peay broke the game open in the top of the fourth, starting the inning with three singles to load the bases before K. Campbell homered to right field for the grand slam. The Governors added two more runs in the top of the fifth, this time off a single from Campbell to make the score 6-0.

Alabama State earned their run in the bottom half of the fifth, after Kindall DeRamus (Helena, Ala.) bunted to reach first and scored on the next at-bat after Greenlee tripled to right center to bring her home.

Greenlee (1-1) worked for 4.2 innings and gave up eight hits and five earned runs while striking out two batters. Elle Lunsford (Lawrenceville, Ga.) pitched 2.1 innings in relief and allowed just two hits in her appearance.

DeRamus and Greenlee led the Hornets at the plate on the day with two hits each, while Aishja Wilcher (Barnesville, Ga.), Kiana Parrish (Stockton, Calif.) and Jamaica Flowers (Montgomery, Ala.) all earned a hit on the afternoon.

Alabama State 3, Charleston 1
The Lady Hornets got on the board early in the bottom of the first after DeRamus drew a leadoff walk and later scored off a double from Alex Preston (Stockton, Calif.).

The Cougars responded in the second, with Jenna Carter scoring off a bunt coupled by Alabama State errors; however, the Hornets retook the lead in the bottom half of the third with an RBI single from Greenlee.

Alabama State added their third and final run in the fifth – another off the combination of DeRamus and Preston – as the latter drove in her second run of the game on a sacrifice fly to right field.

DeRamus led the Hornets at the plate, going 2-for-2 along with a walk and scoring three runs, while Preston added a hit, and two RBI followed by Greenlee who added a hit and an RBI in the win.

Freshman Ashley Pye (Stockton, Calif.) worked 4.1 innings in the circle in her debut, allowing just four hits and a run in 18 baters faced. Fellow freshman Elle Lunsford (Lawrenceville, Ga.) earned the save in relief, pitching 2.2 innings and struck out two Cougars.
