Alabama State extends win streak with win over Mississippi Valley State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State scored 90 points for the second consecutive game as they took down Mississippi Valley State 90-77 in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) matchup inside the Dunn-Oliver Acadome on Monday evening.
 
Alabama State (10-12, 9-4 SWAC) had a rough start to the matchup, as Mississippi Valley State started the game on a 6-0 run, ending with Jayla Crawford (Birmingham, Ala.) scoring inside for the first basket for the Hornets.
 
Ayana Emmanuel (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) tied the game at 10-10 at the five-minute mark with a three-pointer assisted by Tyesha Rudolph (Evergreen, Ala.), however the long-range score was matched on the next Mississippi Valley possession.
 
After finding themselves down 24-17 with just over two minutes to play, Emmanuel sparked a four-point swing to end the quarter with consecutive baskets to put the score at 24-21 to end the opening quarter. The teams battled in a tight second quarter as well, with neither creating separation, as the Hornets trailed at half 44-42.
 
Alabama State used a 21-7 third quarter to blow the game open, forcing Mississippi Valley into seven turnovers, while holding them to just three field goals in the quarter. The Hornets shot over 47 percent during the frame and pushed their lead to double-digits to head into the final quarter leading 63-51 and maintained the momentum for the remainder of play.
 
The Hornet starting backcourt of Crawford and Emmanuel combined for 44 points – 22 each, while Emmanuel added five rebounds and four assists, followed by a pair of rebounds and a pair of steals from Crawford.
 
Shmya Ward (Memphis, Tenn.) finished with 13 points, nine rebounds and three assists in 24 minutes, while Rudolph added 12 points, nine rebounds and three assists in the win.
 
Alabama State finished the game shooting 47.3 (35-for-74) percent from the field, 26.3 (5-for-19) percent from three-point range, and 65.2 (15-for-23) percent from the free throw line for the game. Meanwhile, Mississippi Valley shot 37.7 (26-for-69) percent from the floor, 26.9 (7-for-26) percent from deep and 65.2 (15-for-23) percent from the charity stripe.
 
Four Delta Devilettes reached double-figures in the contest, led by Sarah Moore with a 19-point, 16 rebound double-double, followed by Krisen Hunt with 15 points on five threes. Mikayla Etienne and Ronni Williams finished with 13 and 10 points respectively.
