STEPHENVILLE, Texas | Alabama State (5-4) started the Whataburger Softball Invitational with two wins on day one as they defeated Texas A&M Corpus Christi 5-0 before taking down Prairie View A&M 7-2 at the Tarleton Softball Complex.

The Lady Hornets were the first on the board, scoring in the second inning after
Jazmine Dodd (Bentonville, Ark.) doubled to lead off the inning and scored off a single to center from
Kiana Parrish (Stockton, Calif.). Alabama State added another run in the fourth after a scoreless third when Parrish brought Dodd home for the second time to go up 2-0.

Jaeda Gardner (Pike Road, Ala.) led off the sixth with a double to left field and was followed by Dodd who reached base on an error. A batter later, Parrish earned her third hit of the day with a single to drive in a run, while the next score was off a wild pitch for the 4-0 lead. The Hornets scored their final run in the seventh with a score from
Alexia Denby (Murrieta, Calif.) driven in by Dodd.

Three Hornets recorded three hits on the day, with Dodd along with three runs and an RBI, along with
Kindall DeRamus (Helena, Ala.), and Parrish, who also drove in three runs as the Hornets pounded out 13 hits. Gardner also earned a pair of hits and scored a run in the win.

Bailey Greenlee (Snohomish, Wash.) pitched a complete game, allowing just five hits and struck out six batters. Beatriz Lara (2-1) picked up the loss in the early game, working 5.1 innings.

After a scoreless first on both sides, the Hornets took a two-score lead after DeRamus earned a bases loaded single to right field to drive in
Destinee Dixon (Bullard, Texas). Alabama State added another pair of runs in the bottom of the third, after Parrish singled to bring home Dodd and pinch runner
Zoe Disroee (Lilburn, Ga.) for a 4-0 lead.

Prairie View A&M scored two in the second after loading the bases and earning an RBI single without an out. After the score, Greenlee returned to the mound for the Hornets, and forced a fly out to get out of the inning leading 4-2.

After a walk to start the sixth, Alabama State got two runners on after a Panther error and a single from DeRamus. At the next at bat, Garnder drove home pinch runner
Arianna Atchley (Millbrook, Ala.) while DeRamus and
Milaan Joseph (Stockbridge, Ga.) scored later in the inning for the 7-0 final.

Greenlee (3-2) worked for seven innings, allowing seven hits and walking two while striking out five of the 28 batters faced.
Elle Lunsford (Lawrenceville, Ga.) pitched in relief, giving up four hits and two runs from the bullpen.

UP NEXT
Alabama State will return to competition on Saturday to play two more games, starting at 12 pm with a rematch against Texas A&M Corpus Christi and a 5 pm game against the host Tarleton State.
