STEPHENVILLE, Texas | Alabama State (4-6) had a rough day two at the Whataburger Softball Invitational as they fell to Texas A&M Corpus Christi 14-4 to start the day before falling to host Tarleton State 7-2 at the Tarleton Softball Complex.

The Islanders got on the board at the start of the game, earning their first base runners on two walks that were driven in by an RBI double, the only hit of the top half of the inning. They added to their lead in the second, scoring five runs off three hits and two Hornet errors.

Texas A&M Corpus Christi extended their lead again in the third, pounding out another five hits and earning six more runs to make the score 13-0 in the middle third.

Alabama State got on the board in the bottom half of the inning, after
Jaeda Gardner (Pike Road, Ala.) reached on an error by the pitcher with two outs.
Alex Preston (Stockton, Calif.) singled to left field in the next at-bat, followed by a walk to load the bases.

After a pitching sub, an error allowed
Destinee Dixon (Bullard, Texas) to reach base, scoring Gardner for the first run, while
Kiana Parrish (Stockton, Calif.) doubled to right center next to clear the bases, making the score 13-4 before the Islanders added their final score in the in the fourth on an RBI double down the right field line.

Alabama State earned just four hits in game one, with Dixon,
Madison Myers (Brownsville, Tenn.), Parrish, and Preston all earning hits.

Ashley Pye (Stockton, Calif.) picked up the loss for the Hornets, working one inning and eight total batters. Meanwhile,
Elle Lunsford (Lawrenceville, Ga.) worked 1.2 innings, facing 15 batters and allowing six hits, followed by
Olivia Brown (Bonaire, Ga.) who finished the remaining 2.1 innings of work.

Denay Smith picked up the win in relief for the Islanders, working 2.1 innings and surrendering three hits and just one run while Siarah Galvan started in the circle, pitching 2.2 innings, giving up three runs.

Tarleton State 7, Alabama State 3
The Hornets scored first in the afternoon game, after the first four batters singled to load the bases.
Jazmine Dodd (Bentonville, Ark.) hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring
Kindall DeRamus (Helena, Ala.) for the first run.

The Texans responded in the bottom half of the inning on a homer to left field, after starting pitcher
Bailey Greenlee (Snohomish, Wash.) forced two flyouts. They added to their lead in the fourth after two scoreless innings, starting the bottom of the fourth with a leadoff home run followed by a triple that scored on the next at-bat for the 3-1 lead. Tarleton State added another score in the fifth, on their third home run of the game, this time from Katy Schaefer to go up 4-1.

Alabama State got on the board again in the sixth after singles from
Alex Massie (Pottsboro, Texas) and Myers, with Massie scoring on the next at-bat after an error. However, the Texans added another three scores for their final runs in the bottom half of the frame.

Parrish doubled to start the inning and later scored on a single from Massie in the seventh with one out, however the Hornets could not rally in the final inning.

Massie earned four of the nine hits from Alabama State on the evening, while DeRamus and Parrish both recorded a hit and scored a run.

Greenlee (3-3) got the start in the circle, pitching 5.0 innings, and allowing 10 hits while striking out four of 31 batters. Brown pitched the sixth inning in relief, allowing just one hit.

Tristan Bridges picked up the win for the Texans, working six innings and allowing five hits and just two runs on the day, while Kennedy Ferguson worked for an inning and gave up a run.

UP NEXT
Alabama State will return to competition on Sunday for the final day of the tournament, with an early 9 am start against Syracuse.
