JACKSON, Miss. | Alabama State opens Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play at the SWAC Pod I on Saturday against Mississippi Valley State, with both matches taking place on the Jackson State campus.
The Hornets will face Mississippi Valley State at 2 pm on Saturday, before facing Jackson State in their final match of the Pod on Sunday at 10 am (men) and 2 pm (women).
On the men's side, Alabama State (0-3) captured the regular season championship before finishing as the runner-up last season. They have won four of the last six championships in conference play. Meanwhile, on the women's side, Alabama State (1-3) has captured the last four conference championships.
The Hornets enter play this weekend following a loss to No. 24 Auburn. A pair of players have picked up wins in singles' play this season including
Samrakshyak Bajracharya (Katmandu, Nepal) who has split a pair of matches (1-1), picking up a win at number four singles.
Matis Amier (Epernay, France) has picked up a win this season on his way to a 1-2 record thus far, picking up a win at number six singles.
The women enter the weekend fresh off a split in matches in the city of Mobile last weekend, picking up a win over Southeastern Louisiana.
Bea Acena (Dubai, UAE) leads Alabama State with a pair of wins, posting a 2-1 singles record with all three matches played at number five. Three other student-athletes have picked up singles victories this season including
Sahra Bouchaala (Aix-En-Provence, France),
Francesca Duca (Ploiesti, Romania), and
Timothee Legaud (Severac, France).
The doubles team of Bouchaala and Legaud is undefeated at 2-0, while the team of Acena and
Urska Velec (Maribor, Slovenia) is 2-1 on the young season.
