STEPHENVILLE, Texas | Alabama State (4-7) concluded a weekend of play at the Whataburger Softball Invitational falling to Syracuse 11-3 on Sunday morning at the Tarleton Softball Complex.
The Hornets struggled at the plate in their final game of the tournament, with
Jazmine Dodd (Bentonville, Ark.) earning a single to center field in the first inning, the only hit for Alabama State until a fourth inning double from
Alex Preston (Stockton, Calif.).

Syracuse broke the game open in the bottom half of the first, exploding for five runs, including a pair of two-run homers. The Orange added a run in the second inning on a sacrifice fly to center field to make the score 6-0.

The third inning was similar to the first, as Syracuse retired the side before pounding out five hits in the inning, good for five runs to extend their lead.

After a scoreless fourth on both sides, Alabama State found some offense in the fifth, as
Alex Massie (Pottsboro, Texas) singled to left field to start the inning. Massie was followed by singles from
Elizabeth Williams (Enterprise, Ala.) and
Kat McGlamry (Crawfordville, Fla.), who drove in pinch runner
Aishja Wilcher (Barnesville, Ga.) for their first score.

On the next at-bat,
Leah Richardson (Tracy, Calif.) was hit by a pitch before
Arianna Atchley (Millbrook, Ala.) singled to center to drive in Williams and pinch runner
Madison Myers (Brownsville, Tenn.) for the 11-3 score.

Alabama State earned six hits on the day, led by Atchley with a hit and a pair of RBIs, while also McGlamry added a hit and run batted in.

Bailey Greenlee (Snohomish, Wash.) picked up the loss, allowing five runs in the first, followed by
Olivia Brown (Bonaire, Ga.) who worked the remainder of the contest for the Hornets. Lindsey Hendrix (2-0) earned the win for the Orange, working 4.0 innings and allowing just two hits, while Kaia Oliver pitched an inning in relief to close out the game.

UP NEXT
Alabama State will return to Montgomery next weekend as they host the HBCU Celebration tournament from Friday, February 25 to Sunday, February 27 at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex. Participants will include Alabama A&M, Grambling State, and South Carolina State.
