MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State (4-8) dropped a tight one-score game to Grambling State, giving up just two runs in the sixth on day one of the HBCU Celebration Classic on Friday evening inside the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.
Â
Grambling won a pitching duel, as
Bailey Greenlee (Snohomish, Wash.) and Dacia Richard gave up just five combined hits and five scoreless innings each.
Â
While neither team earned a hit through five innings, the Tigers posted a run after a walk and sacrifice bunt paired with a Hornet error. Anaiyah Fultz ended the no-hitter from Greenlee in the top half of the inning with a single to right field to drive for their second score.
Â
The Hornets earned a hit to end the no-hitter from Grambling in the bottom half of the inning before entering the final inning still down two.
Madison Myers (Brownsville, Tenn.) started off the inning with an infield single and later stole second on the next at bat. After another stolen base from Myers, pinch hitter
Destinee Dixon (Bullard, Texas) singled to right center to drive in the score, however Alabama State could not convert another score for the 2-1 final.
Â
Greenlee (3-5) picked up the loss for the Hornets, pitching a complete game in the circle and not giving up an earned run. The junior allowed just two hits and four walks, while striking out nine batters on the day. Meanwhile, Richard (3-2) earned the win for the Tigers after working seven innings and allowing just one run and three hits.
