MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State fell behind early before chipping away at the lead, falling to UT-Martin 5-3 at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex on Friday night.
UT-Martin (2-2) got on the board with a pair of runs in the second and third off Alabama State starter
Jeremy Rivera (Toa Alta, PR) to build a 4-0 lead, before Alabama State got on the board in the third. The lead grew in the fifth before the Skyhawks were able to hold on down the stretch.
Rivera (0-1) suffered the loss, working 2.2 innings allowing five runs (four earned) with four strikeouts.
Osvaldo Mendez (Carolina, PR) came in to work 4.1 innings and allowed one run, while
Payton Harris (Hattiesburg, Miss.) pitched the final two innings. Corey King (Lithonia, Ga.) led Alabama State with a pair of hits.
The two will meet in a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 2 pm to avoid Sunday rain.
How It Happened
- T2 | UT-Martin got on the board when Casey Harford scored on a wild pitch, before a single to left field by Cameron Brady drove in another run (2-0, UT-Martin).
- T3 | The Skyhawks used a double by Jack Culumovic to drive in a pair of runs (4-0, UT-Martin).
- B3 | Corey King (Lithonia, Ga.) singled to right to drive in Trenton Jamison (Atlanta, Ga.) for the Hornets' first run (4-1, UT-Martin).
- T5 | Harford put the Skyhawks on the board with a double to left on a 3-2 pitch (5-1, UT-Martin).
- B6 | Kerrigan Edmondson came on in the inning with two outs and delivered with a pinch-hit single to left center on a 3-2 pitch (5-2, UT-Martin).
Postgame Notes
- The meeting between the two schools on Friday was the first in school history, and just the second home game of the young season for the Hornets.
- Rivera made his second start of the season, and for the second time was relieved early in the contest – this time by Mendez.
- Harris made his third appearance of the season on the mound, including in his second consecutive home game.
- The pinch hit single from Edmonson in the sixth was his first of the season.
- Kyler McIntosh (Columbus, Ind.) made his first appearance in the field for the Hornets when he entered the game at second base in the top of the ninth.
