After freshman Olivia Brown (Bonaire, Ga.) started in the circle with a strikeout and two pop ups, Madison Myers (Brownsville, Tenn.) led off the bottom half of the inning with a walk and stole two bases en route to scoring on a single from Kindall DeRamus (Helena, Ala.).

DeRamus also scored two bases in the inning and scored two batters later on a passed ball to gain an early 2-0 lead.

Brown retired the side in the second and provided offense of her own in the second with a base hit to right to drive in Arianna Atchley (Millbrook, Ala.) who singled earlier in the inning.

The Hornets later extended their lead in the bottom half of the fifth, as Myers led off the top of the order again by beating a ground ball to second base. She later advanced to second on a bunt by DeRamus, and both runners scored later in the inning the first on a groundout from Alex Preston (Stockton, Calif.) and the second from a sacrifice fly from Jaeda Gardner (Pike Road, Ala.).

Alabama State scored again in the sixth after an RBI single to left from Atchley to bring home Alexia Denby (), followed by a sacrifice fly from Aishja Wilcher (Barnesville, Ga.). Pinch hitter Alex Massie (Pottsboro, Texas) ended the ball game with an RBI double for the 8-0 final.

Brown (1-1) picked up her first collegiate win, working 3.0 innings and allowing just one hit and striking out a pair of batters. Ashley Pye (Stockton, Calif.) came in for the remainder and allowed three hits.
