Alabama State falls to perennial power Columbus State

Hornets drop two singles matches in three sets to 2021 DII national runner-up

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State came up short to perennial national Division II power Columbus State on Wednesday afternoon, dropping two singles in three sets in a 5-2 decision at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center.

Alabama State (0-2) dropped the doubles point to the Cougars to start the day and found themselves down 2-0 before a victory by Matis Amier (Epernay, France) at number six over Justin Welz in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 to pull the Hornets to within 2-1. However, Columbus State (2-0) was able to push the lead to 3-1 with a win at three number three singles.

Things got interesting after that as the three remaining matches all went to three sets.

Samrakshyak Bajracharya (Katmandu, Nepal) gave the Hornets a chance with a win after dropping the second set on a break, winning his match 6-4, 5-7, 6-2; leaving just two matches on the court. Columbus State clinched the match at number two where the Hornets' Ruan Du Preez (Cape Town, South Africa) dropped a 5-7, 7-5, 6-1 match. The final match of the day also went three sets at number five where Alabama State's Kristofer Johnson (Bromley, UK) dropped a heartbreaking 2-6, 6-3, 4-6 decision.
