Hornets fall to Samford in the bottom of the ninth

The come-from-behind win for Samford was the second against the Hornets

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | For the second time in as many meetings, Samford was able to come from behind in the ninth, this time walking off Alabama State 6-5 on Wednesday night.

Samford (6-2) trailed most of the game until they were able to plate five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning with one out to pick up their second come from behind of the week following an upset of No. 11 Florida State. Alabama State (3-7) broke open a tie with a single run in the fourth inning and two more in the sixth to grow the lead three. They were able to do so by getting six hits off four different Samford pitchers. Kevin Matos (San Juan, PR) got his first collegiate start and worked into the fifth against the Bulldogs. The freshman went 5.1 innings, giving up three hits and one run (earned) with four strikeouts.

Matos was relieved by Luis Rodriguez (Canovanas, PR) who went 2.2 innings giving up three runs (all earned) on three hits, before giving way to Kyler McIntosh (Columbus, Ind.). McIntosh (0-2) was tagged with the loss after recording just one out and giving up a pair of runs.

How It Happened
  • T1 | After back-to-back batters being hit by a pitch, Corey King (Lithonia, Ga.) scored on a groundout to second, beating the throw home for the game's first run (1-0, Alabama State).
  • B1 | Samford answered back with a run of their own on a single up the middle by Kace Garner with two outs to score Will David (1-1).
  • T4 | Angel Jimenez (Santo Domingo, DR) hits a solo shot to left, his second on the year to put Alabama State back on the board (2-1, Alabama State).
  • T6 | Cristopher DeGuzman (Fajardo, PR) scored on a double by Ian Matos (Toa Alta, PR) to left, before Hunter May (Slidell, La.) extended the lead to three with single through the left side (4-1, Alabama State).
  • T9 | King smashed a solo home run to the gap in left center for the final run for the Hornets (5-1, Alabama State).
  • B9 | Samford was able to score five runs on a single, three-run triple and a walk off on a fielder's choice (6-5, Samford).
