NEW ORLEANS, La. Â | No.2 seed Alabama State was upset by Prairie View A&M 4-3 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) semifinals at the Pepsi Tennis Center ending the season for the Hornets. The defending champions dropped the doubles point before the match was decided at number one singles in a three-set thriller.
How It Happened – Doubles
- Alabama State fell behind after dropping the doubles' point when Prairie View A&M clinched with a 7-5 win by the team of Gabrielle Leslie and Jada Hall over the Alabama State team of Urska Velec (Maribor, Slovenia) and Bea Acena (Dubai, UAE).
- The Hornets grabbed the lead early in doubles with a 6-1 win at number three before Prairie View A&M tied it up with a win at number one to force the clinching match to number two.
How It Happened – Singles
- Alabama State tied the match up with a win by Acena at number six singles over Salma Villalobos 6-0, 6-2 and took the lead when Velec won her match over Victoria Castillo at number two 6-3, 6-1.
- The Hornets took a 3-1 lead at number three when Lizaveta Demchenko (Mogilev, Belarus) won her match at number three over Hill 5-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-4; before Prairie View A&M won the remaining three singles matches to clinch the team victory.
