Women’s Tennis Places Fourth at HBCU National Championship

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Alabama State women's tennis team took the short trip to College Park, Georgia this past weekend to compete in the 2022 HBCU National Tennis Championships where they placed fourth with 21.5 points. Xavier won the women's title with 25 total points, respectively.

SINGLES PLAY 

FLIGHT A


Sara Bouchaala fell short in the round of 16 with a loss to AAMU's Jasmine Boyd (6-2, 6-4, [10-6]). 

Lizaveta Dzemchanka fell to Bowie State's Kayla Lowery (6-0, 6-0) in the round of 16. 

FLIGHT B

Claudia Orsini saw success in the flight B singles bracket as she defeated TSU's Mikalia Coleman (6-1, 6-1) in the round of 32, followed by a round of 16 win over Claire Machisa (6-4, 7-5) from Bowie State, a semifinal win over AAMU's Alicia Owegi (2-6, 7-5, 7-6) before battling to a draw in the final round against FAMU's Genesis Whitelock (7-6, 6-7).

Urksa Velec wraps up the Lady Hornets competing in the Flight B singles bracket. Velec took down AAMU's Deja Brown (4-6, 6-4, [13-11]) in the round of 32 before falling to Albany State's Natalya Ogunwale (3-6, 7-6, [10-8]). 

FLIGHT C

Bea Acena battled Tuskegee's Barbara Phillips to a round of 64 victory (6-0, 6-1), followed by a win over Albany State's Bianca Leao (6-0, 7-5), and a round of 16 win over AAMU's Neha Ghare (6-4, 7-6). Acena eventually fell in the quarterfinal to Xavier's Valentina Largacha (3-6, 6-2, [11-9]). 

Timothee Legauld rounds out the Hornets in play for the Flight C singles bracket as she picked up a win over JCSU's Ione Brewer (6-3, 6-1) in the round of 32 before falling to NCCU's Isabelle Exsted (5-7, 6-3, [9-11])

DOUBLES PLAY

FLIGHT A

The ASU duo of Bea Acena and Urska Velec saw success in the round of 16 with a win over the Tennessee State pairing of Warona Mdlulwa and Aroa Castillo (6-3), but fell in the quarterfinal to Xavier duo Kareemah Muhammed and Valaine Clarke (6-7).

Also competing in the Flight A doubles bracket were Claudia Orsini and Sahra Bouchaala. The duo captured a round of 16 win over Grambling pair Claire Machisa and Takudzwa Mawisire (6-1) before suffering a similar 6-1 defeat in the quarterfinal to Alcorn's Andrea Quiroz and Veronica Rodriguez. 

FLIGHT B

Lizaveta Dzemchanka and Francesca Lucia Duca found themselves paired up in the Flight B doubles bracket. The duo proved to be successful as they advanced to the quarterfinal with wins over Xavier's Juliette Finch and Yi Chen Pao (6-1), FAMU's Rebekkah Gaines and Claudia Sumaia (6-4), before eventually falling to the pairing of Isabelle Exsted and Timothee Legaud (3-6).
