Strong Second Half Propels @BamaStateMBB Past AAMU

MOBILE, Ala. | Isaiah Range scored 18 points to lead the Alabama State University men's basketball team to a 69-61 win over Alabama A&M University in the 2023 Bridge Builders Classic on Monday at the Mitchell Center.

 HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Alabama State grabbed an early 14-8 lead on a 6-2 run that culminated with two Alex Anderson free throws at the 14:34 mark. 
  • The Bulldogs went on a 7-0 run to erase the deficit and take a 15-14 lead. 
  • A 7-0 run gave AAMU a 24-18 lead after a Garrett Hicks 3-pointer 7:55 to go before haltime.
  • The Hornets fought back to within 24-26 on consecutive slam dunks by Jordan O'Neal with 5:22 left. 
  • Roland McCoy made two straight 3-pointers to keep the Hornets down by two at 34-32 with under 3:00 to go in the first half. 
  • Alabama State shot 44 percent from the floor and made four 3-pointers to trail 41-36 at halftime. 
  • Alabama State started the second half with an 8-0 run to take a 44-43 lead with 3:00 gone off the clock. 
  • Trailing 48-46, the Hornets went on a 10-0 run after an Isaiah Range three and layup with 12:09 left in the second half. 
  • The Hornets went 9-of-11 from the field for 81 percent, including 3-for-3 from the behind the arc to build a 60-52 lead with 7:38 left in the second half.
  • O'Neal's rebound and layup followed by a slam dunk gave the Hornets its largest lead at 67-56 with under 2:59 remaining. 
  • An alley-oop dunk by O'Neal and two McCoy free throws put the Hornets ahead 69-57 lead in the final minute. 
  • Alabama A&M scored the final four points of the game to close the final gap to 69-61.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 

  • Alabama State placed three or more players in double figures for the fourth straight game. 
  • The Hornets made 12-of-15 free throws to shoot 80 percent or better for the fifth time this season.
  • Alabama State went 3-for-6 from arc and held a 20-16 edge on the boards in the second half.
  • Range netted 18 points to score in double figures for the eighth straight game and 14th time this season.
