MONTGOMERY, Ala. |  A rally from a 23-point deficit came up short as Alabama State University men's basketball dropped a 71-65 decision to Texas Southern University on Monday night in the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

 HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • The Tigers stretched a 4-3 lead into a 14-5 lead on a Devon Barnes 3-pointer with 16:33 left in the first half.
  • Texas Southern closed the first half with an 11-2 run to build a 46-25 halftime lead.
  • Alabama State opened the second half on a 6-2 run 3:00 into the second half to trim the TSU lead down to 48-31.
  • The Hornets went on a 10-2 run to cut the Tigers' lead to 56-41 on dunks by Isaiah Range and Eric Coleman with under 10:00 to go in the second half.
  • TJ Madlock's layup and two free throws cut the Tigers' lead to 58-47 with 7:12 remaining. 
  • The Hornets' ended up a 21-4 while holding the Tigers scoreless for over 5:00 to cut the lead down to 58-52 with 4:29 left.  
  • A Damien Madison 3-pointer and a Madlock layup cut TSU's lead down to 58-52 with 4:29 remaining.
  • Range hit back-to-back 3-pointers get the Hornets within 67-65 :38 to go in the contest.
  • A Joirdon Karl Nicholas dunk and two free throws by Farooq helped the Tigers hold off the Hornets.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
  • Range and Madlock led the Hornets with 15 points.
  • Posey finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.
  • O'Neal pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
  • Farooq scored 21 points along with nine rebounds to lead Texas Southern.
  • The Hornets made 15-plus free throws for the fourth straight game, going 16-for-20 from the line.
