Alabama State heads to Daytona for second SWAC Cluster

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State hits the road this weekend for the final Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Cluster this season in Daytona Beach (Fla.) beginning Sunday.
 
Alabama State (11-12, 10-0 SWAC) opens play in the Cluster with a pair of matches on Sunday with Grambling State (7-16, 5-5 SWAC) at noon (CT), followed by Alcorn State (1-14, 1-8 SWAC) at 4 p.m. (CT) to close out the weekend. They will play the final match of the Cluster against UAPB (5-19, 1-2 SWAC) on Monday at 8 a.m. (CT).
 
The three matches are the final road matches of the season for the Lady Hornets who have won 10 consecutive matches, including eight away from Lockhart Gymnasium.

Alabama State Notes
  • The Lady Hornets have four players who have registered 140-plus kills including Jada Rhodes with 240 on the season. She has recorded 934 for her career and is just 66 shy of becoming the sixth player in school history to register 1,000 career kills.
  • Jylen Whitten, who recently recorded her 1,000th career kill, has 220 on the season, while A'Nylah Cobb (169) and Taila Gaines (140) are in triple figures.
  • Meanwhile, Madison Beasley leads the team with 472 assists on the season and became the fifth player at Alabama State to reach 2,000 career kills. Emily Brooks is second on the team in assists this season with 300 and has recorded 769 career assists, just 13 shy of Elicia Warner (1997-98) for 14th all-time.
  • Temperance Chatman leads the team defensively with 337 digs, pacing four players with triple digits in the category. She has recorded 791 career digs, leaving her 25 shy of Roseland Corneille (2010-11) for seventh all-time. She is just 101 away from the top five all-time at Alabama State.
  • The Lady Hornets continue to be one of the toughest serving teams in the conference and the country, ranking second in service aces with 149 which is good for 47th in the nation.
  • They lead the conference in aces per set (1.80) and assists per set (10.80).
Grambling State Notes
  • The Tigers enter the weekend after dropping their last two matches, both at home, to Texas Southern and Prairie View A&M. They won the previous two matches on the road over Southern and Alcorn State.
  • In the first SWAC Cluster (hosted by UAPB), Grambling State dropped a pair of matches to Jackson State and Alabama A&M and defeated Mississippi Valley State.
  • Zyonn Smith leads the team with 207 kills, while Kai Williams has 154 on the season. Meanwhile, Ana Calderon leads the team with 325 assists, while Jaida Felix has recorded 265.
  • Four different players have recorded 100-plus digs for Grambling including Nyah Ellis who leads the team with 285.
 
Alcorn State Notes
  • Alcorn State enters the weekend looking to end a four-match losing streak after falling to Southern on Wednesday. The last win for the Braves came on Oct. 8 against Mississippi Valley State.
  • The Braves dropped matches to Jackson State and Alabama A&M in the Cluster hosted by UAPB earlier this month.
  • Hannah Solomon leads Alcorn State with 94 kills, while Ramona Pulu leads the team with assists with 162.
  • Harmon Carswell has recorded 104 digs this season.
UAPB Notes
  • The Golden Lions enter the week after dropping three of their last five matches, including back-to-back losses to Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern. They registered wins against Alcorn State and Lane during that stretch.
  • In the first Cluster, the Golden Lions lost to Alabama A&M and Jackson State, before defeating Mississippi Valley State.
  • Zykia Jones leads the team with 198 kills with Laila Forston registering 102 for the Golden Lions. Meanwhile, Lyia Jones has recorded a team-high 272 assists, and Anaiah Jordan 198.
  • Defensively, Camille Johnson has recorded 185 digs, and Jones 182.
