Lady Hornets face Texas Southern and PVAMU on Sunday, Southern on Monday

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State heads west for the first of two clusters in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), with the first hosted by Texas Southern in Houston beginning on Sunday.
 
Alabama State, winners of its first three conference games, sits one game behind Prairie View A&M in the win column and the two will play in the second match of the cluster on Sunday. The Lady Hornets open play with Texas Southern and close it with Southern on Monday.
 
The Lady Hornets enter the weekend in the top five in several categories including fifth in points (13.81), fourth in hitting percentage (.174), third in assists (10.09), and second in service aces (1.64). They are also sixth in the conference in kills (10.72) and blocks (1.45).
 
Last season, Alabama State won all six of its matches including three hosted in Montgomery.

Alabama State Notes
  • Since 2009, Alabama State and Texas Southern have met 24 times including just three times in Houston, with the last meeting in Houston coming in 2017.
  • In the first conference matches of the season, the Lady Hornets have dropped just two sets (the first set to Florida A&M and the second set to Bethune-Cookman).
  • Jada Rhodes continues to climb the career leaderboard at Alabama State where is ninth in kills with 811 (30 shy of Chelsea Scott) and is 11th in digs with 607 (three shy of Nikia Byrum).
  • Madison Beasley is currently fifth at the school in assists (1,814), 16th in digs (495), and 11th in service aces (92).
  • Jylen Whitten, a transfer from Jackson State, currently sits at 940 kills for her career and has posted 145 this season. She had a career-high 385 kills during the 2019 season.

  • Texas Southern has split its last four matches this season, with wins coming against UAPB and Alcorn State and all four matches being conference matches.

  • The Panthers have won six of their last seven matches heading into this weekend, including all four conference matches – dropping just two games out of 12.
  • They are currently second in the conference in hitting percentage (.197), assists (10.56), and kills (11.38).
  • They are also third in blocks (1.72) and lead the conference in service aces (1.67).
  • Kylee Owens leads the Panthers with 206 kills, while Nyah Walker has added 127, and Janyah Henderson has added 103.
  • The Panthers have dropped four of the last five in the series to Alabama State.
Southern Notes
  • The Jaguars enter the cluster having won three of their last four matches including a pair of conference matches over Alcorn State and Texas Southern.
  • Southern is currently third in the conference in hitting percentage (.190), fourth in assists (10.03), third in kills (11.03), third in service aces (1.61), and fourth in digs (13.71).
  • Elise Doomes leads the team with 72 kills while Jordan Felix has 54 kills.
  • After dropping 15 straight to Alabama State from 2012 to 2018, Southern has won three of the last five in the series.
