Late Defensive Stand Seals Hornets' Homecoming Win over Bethune-Cookman

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | A late defensive stand sealed Alabama State University's (1-3, 0-2 SWAC) 19-14 Homecoming win over Bethune-Cookman University on Saturday at the New ASU Stadium.

 HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jayden John gave the Hornets at 3-0 lead with a 24-yard field goal just under five minutes into the contest. 
  • Jimmie Robinson III rushed in from seven-yards out to put Bethune-Cookman ahead 7-3 midway through the first quarter. 
  • The Hornets had a chance to cut into the B-CU lead with a 39-yard field goal but a botched snapped turned the ball over on downs with 2:44 remaining in the first quarter. 
  • Alabama State opened the second half with drives of 90 and 95 yards to take a 16-7 lead. 
  • Marcus Harris II capped a four-play, 90-yard drive two-yard run and Damon Stewart hit Isaiah Scott for a 21-yard score to cap a 95-yard drive with 7:06 to go in the third quarter. 
  • Jayden John made a 24-yard field goal to open the final stanza and give the Hornets a 19-7 lead. 
  • Walter Simmons III seven-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Brown to cut the Hornets lead to 19-14 with 4:15 remaining in the fourth quarter. 
  • An interception set up Bethune-Cookman at the ASU 10 with 3:06 left in the game, but a Simmons pass on fourth and 10 fell incomplete to end the drive. 
OFFENSIVE NOTABLES
  • The 95-yard third quarter scoring drive was the longest offensive drive of the season. 
  • Kisean Johnson caught six passes on 10 targets and had 99 yards, 31 yards after the catch. 
  • Stewart and Dematrius Davis combined to complete 14-of-22 passes for 63.6 percent.
  • Stewart went 8-for-13 passes for 150 yards and a touchdown.
  • Davis was 6-for-8 for 54 yards,
 
DEFENSIVE NOTABLES
  • The SWARMAS1 yielded a season-low 298 yards, limiting BCU 97 yards in the first half and 101 in the second half. 
  • BCU had 21 yards in the second quarter and 23 yards in the third quarter. 
  • Bethune-Cookman had 23 yards in the third quarter and xx in the second half. 
  • Alabama State had a season-high six sacks by five different players. 
  • Colton Adams had 13 tackles, including a sack and a tackle for loss.
  • DeMarkus Cunningham tallied 11 tackles with eight solo stops and one sack.
  • Andrew Ogletree had six tackles and one sack.
  • Cail Jackson, James Burgess and Treqwan Thomas each one sack each. 
SPECIAL TEAMS NOTABLES
  • Adams blocked field goal in the second quarter, marked the third straight week the Hornets blocked a kick.
  • The Hornets have four blocked kicks on the season, entering the game ranked third in the SWAC and 12th FCS.
  • Robert McMinn had a 28-yard punt return that set up a field goal to open the fourth quarter. 
  • Harrison Tuck had his best game, averaging 44.7 yards per punt on three punts. 
OTHER NOTABLES
  • The Hornets scored on their opening offensive possession for the first time this season. 
  • Alabama State has scored first in three of five games this season. 
  • The Hornets have won two straight in the B-CU series.
