Hornets fall to Iowa on the road, return home on Tuesday

IOWA CITY, Iowa | TJ Madlock led three players in double figures but it wasn't enough as Iowa pulled away in the second half for a 98-67 victory at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Friday night.
 
Madlock led Alabama State (0-2) with 23 points on 9-of-22 shooting, while CJ Hines scored 11 of his 15 points in the first half for the Hornets. Jasteven Walker scored a career-high 13 points off the bench on 5-of-8 shooting and added nine rebounds.
 
Alabama State shot 35.4 (23-of-65) percent from the floor and 27.3 (6-of-22) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 75.0 (15-of-20) percent from the free throw line, while grabbing 46 rebounds.
 
Meanwhile, Patrick McCaffrey led Iowa (2-0) with 22 points, while Payton Sandfort recorded a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Ben Krikke added 13 and Tony Perkins 12 for the Hawkeyes who finished the night shooting 45.8 (33-of-72) percent from the floor. They also shot 31.0 (9-of-28) percent from beyond the arc and 65.7 (23-of-35) percent from the free throw line.
 
How It Happened
  • Iowa jumped out to an early lead before Alabama State was able to tie the game, and then take its only lead of the game with 8:39 to play at 25-24.
  • The Hawkeyes went on a 10-2 run over the next two minutes to take a 34-27 lead before Alabama State closed to 35-32 on a three-pointer from Sean Smith with 4:49 to play. However, Iowa closed the half on a 14-5 run to take a 49-37 lead at the intermission.
  • Iowa was able to build on that in the second half building the lead to 18 just six minutes into the half.
  • Alabama State scored 26 points off the bench in the loss, while Iowa scored 32 off the bench – most late in the game.

  • The game featured a pair of ties and lead changes.
  • The 22 field goals attempted by Madlock set a new career-high, topping the mark of 20 set last year at Pittsburgh (11/20/22).
  • Walker set a new career-high with his 13 points off the bench after scoring nine in the season-opener at Ole Miss (11/6/23).
  • Hines scored 11 of his 15 points in the first half for the Hornets, finishing the night a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line.
  • The Hornets grabbed 16 offensive rebounds including four by Ubong Okon who finished with eight total rebounds off the bench.
