Lady Hornets stay perfect in conference play, host Jackson State Sunday

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State won its 15th consecutive match with a 3-0 (25-10, 25-14, 25-17) victory over Mississippi Valley State at Lockhart Gymnasium on Friday night.
 
Jada Rhodes continues to inch closer to 1,000 career kills after recording 18 on the night giving her 987 for her career. A'Nylah Cobb added eight and Christyn Ashby six in the win. Meanwhile, Madison Beasley led Alabama State (16-12, 15-0 SWAC) with 23 assists and a pair of service aces, while Emily Brooks added 18.
 
Temperance Chatman led the effort defensively with 12 digs, with Rhodes and Logan Horne adding seven each.

How It Happened
Set 1 |
After Mississippi Valley State cut the early lead to just one, Alabama State went on a 6-0 run highlighted by three kills from Cobb and one each from Ashby and Kaylen Hines to grow the led to 10-3. A 5-0 run pushed the lead to 13 at 18-5 before a service ace from Taila Gaines ended a 10-2 run and the first set for the 1-0 overall lead.
 
Set 2 | Alabama State took a 5-2 lead before the Devilettes were able to trim the lead to 10-5. The Lady Hornets pushed the lead to 15-6 on a 5-0 run with a kill from Ashby and another from Jylen Whitten. A 6-1 run pushed the lead to 24-11 before Mississippi Valley State scored three consecutive points. However, Alabama State used a kill from Cobb to put away the second set.
 
Set 3 | Alabama State took an early 7-3 lead and used a 5-0 run later in the set to push the lead to 16-9. Mississippi Valley State scored four of the next five points to get to within 17-13 before Alabama State used four kills from Rhodes and a service ace from Chatman to push the lead to 22-13. Mississippi Valley State scored four of the next six to pull to 24-17 before a kill from Cobb ended the match.

Alabama State returns to action on Sunday at 3 p.m. against Jackson State on Senior Day. Before the match, the Lady Hornets will recognize their nine seniors playing their final home match.
