Alabama State falls to SMU

DALLAS, Texas --The Alabama State women's basketball team got a 29-point performance from the bench, but fell 96-47 to the SMU Mustangs on the road Saturday.

April Hooks led the Hornets with 14 points off of the bench while Shmya Ward chipped in as well with seven points and two blocks. Cordasia Harris added seven points, two steals and two blocks

Harris pulled down three offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Alabama State, grabbing 14 boards and turning them into six second chance points.

Alabama State forced 13 SMU turnovers. The Hornets turned those takeaways into seven points on the other end of the floor. Kristian Jackson led the way individually with two steals.

How It Happened

Alabama State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 30-11 at the end of the first quarter.

The Hornets continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 52-19 halftime deficit.

Alabama State's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Hornets faced a 73-37 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Alabama State played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 18 points in the paint.

Alabama State could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 96-47. Alabama State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 10 points.
