MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The Alabama State women's basketball fell to Jacksonville State University 74-53 in its home opener on Thursday at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
The Hornets had two players score in double figures, led by Che'Mya Carouthers' 13 points and two steals. Shmya Ward tacked on 13 points and Cordasia Harris added eight points and eight rebounds.
The Alabama State offense was impressive from three-point land, pouring in eight threes on 19 attempts. Carouthers hit three treys for the Hornets in the contest.
The Alabama State defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Thursday's game, forcing 19 Jacksonville State turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 13 points on the offensive end of the floor. DaKiyah Sanders led the way individually for the Hornets with four steals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After falling behind 18-4, Alabama State went on a 5-0 run with 58 seconds left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Carouthers, to narrow its deficit to 18-9, a score that would hold for the rest of the period.
Jacksonville State kept adding to that lead, building a 30-16 advantage before Alabama State went on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Whitney Dunn, to narrow its deficit to 30-21, a score that would hold until halftime.
Alabama State's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Hornets faced a 52-34 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Alabama State knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 13 total points.
Alabama State could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 74-53. Alabama State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 19 points.
