Seniors Ward, Emmanuel, and Crawford lead @BamaStateWBB Past AAMU

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State University women's basketball team took over second place in the SWAC with a 69-57 win over instate rival Alabama A&M University on Saturday inside the Dunn-Oliver Acadome. 
 
Shmya Ward led four Lady Hornets in double figures with 17 points followed by Ayana Emmanuel with 15. Jayla Crawford added 12 points and DiKiyah Sanders chipped in 11 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Alabama A&M held a 15-14 advantage with 2:15 left in the first quarter.
  • Alabama State went on an 8-0 run to take a 22-15 lead after a Shmya Ward layup.
  • Ward made another layup to the end of an 8-0 run as the Lady Hornets opened a 30-16 lead at the 6:04 mark of the second quarter.
  • Alabama State held the Bulldogs without a field goal for eight minutes to hold a 41-25 halftime lead.
  • Amani Free made a layup to cut the ASU lead down to 47-33 with just over two minutes to go in the third quarter.
  • The Bulldogs scored the first four points of the final stanza to trim the deficit to 30-28 at the 9:01 mark.
  • Ward added four points during a 6-2 run to extend the lead out to 56-50 with 6:44 remaining.
  • Alabama A&M used a 7-0 run to cut ASU's lead to 56-47 with under five minutes to play.
  • Emannuel hit a three-pointer to push the lead back out to 59-57 with 4:20 to go.
  • Emmanuel grabbed a big offensive board and put back off a free throw miss to keep ASU's double-digit lead, 63-51 with 2:42 left in the fourth quarter.
  • Alabama A&M would not climb any closer than 10 points the rest of the way.   
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Ward finished with 17 points to pace four Lady Hornets in double figures along with six rebounds. .
  • Emmanuel followed Ward with 15 points and four rebounds.
  • Crawford had 12 points.
  • Sanders added 11 points and two assists.
  • Free led Alabama A&M with 16 points.
