Lady Hornets Comeback Falls Short in Season Finale At Grambling

GRAMBLING, La. | The Alabama State Lady Hornets' valiant comeback came up just short in a 62-60 loss at Grambling State on Saturday at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center. It was the regular season finale for both teams.

 HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Grambling took an early lead of 14 points in the first minutes of the second quarter after leading by nine points at the end of the first. 
  • Despite nine first-half points from Ayana Emmanuel, the Lady Hornets trailed 39-21, at the break. 
  • ASU shot 52 percent (8 for 15) from the field in the first half and led in rebounding (11-7) but took 11 fewer shots and suffered 10 turnovers.
  • The Lady Hornets opened the third quarter with a 9-0 run led by layups from Emmanuel and Jayla Crawford to cut the lead to 39-30. 
  • Grambling pushed the lead back to 14 points and led by that margin after three periods. 
  • Crawford's 3-pointer got ASU to within 10 points (54-44) with 8:20 left in the game. 
  • Grambling's lead shrunk to 6 on an ASU 5-1 run capped by Emmanuel's jumper at the 5:04 mark of the fourth quarter.
  • Emmanuel added two free throws with 3:43 left pulling ASU to within 5.
  • Samiya Steele's jumper with 2:52 left gave the Lady Hornets their first lead of the game at 58-57. Grambling recovered the lead on a pair of free throws with 1:55 left 
  • Two more free throws for the Tigers pushed their lead to 61-58 before Emmanuel scored on a layup with six seconds to go.
  • ASU was unable to get another shot in the final seconds.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Emmanuel finished with a team-high 22 points. She also led the team with six rebounds and added three assists and three steals.
  • Crawford scored 11 points including two made 3-pointers. 
  • Steele added 10 points on 4-of-5 field goal attempts.
  • ASU struggled with turnovers with 18, which led to 21 points for Grambling. 
UP NEXT: Alabama State will play in the SWAC Tournament at UAB's Bartow Arena in Birmingham March 8-11. The opponent and tipoff will be announced later.
