MONTGOMERY, Ala.| Omar Melendez struck out a career-high 12 to help Alabama State University baseball claim an 8-2 win over Mississippi Valley State University on Thursday at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.
After giving up a two-run home run in the first inning, Malendez retired the next 22 batters and 25-of-26 hitters to record his third complete game of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Davion Hull hit a two-run home run to stake Mississippi Valley a 2-0 lead.
- The Hornets tied the game with a two-run third. Trent Jamison singled and Ian Matos walked. Corey King pinch ran for Jamison and scored on a Jack Hay single and Matos scored on a throwing error.
- Hay and Matos delivered RBI singles to give the Hornets their first lead at 4-2 in the fifth.
- Alabama State broke the game open with a four-run eighth to take a 8-2 lead. Cristian Lopez had a bases loaded single to plate two runs. Ali Lapread scored on a wild pitch and Jayden Sloan's RBI single scored Lopez.
ON THE MOUND
- Melendez (6-0) gave up two runs on three hits with a career-high 12 strikeouts in 9.0 inning of work.
- MVSU starter Jose Salazar Ortega gave up four runs on seven hits with three strikeouts to teke the loss.
