ORLANDO, Fla. | Alabama State dropped a tough three-set match to FIU on Saturday morning at the UCF Challenge 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-20).
A'Nylah Cobb led Alabama State with 11 kills, while
Jylen Whitten added six and
Talia Gaines five.
Emily Brooks led the Lady Hornets with four service aces and added 14 assists, while
Madison Beasley added 14 assists – giving her 1,503 career assists at Alabama State.
Temperance Chatman led the Lady Hornets with nine digs.
How It Happened
SET 1 | Alabama State jumped ahead early with kills from Cobb and Whitten and took a 4-3 lead on a service ace before FIU took a 5-4 lead. The Lady Hornets went on a 4-0 run to take an 8-5 lead highlighted by a pair of service aces and kills. After pushing the lead to 11-7, the Lady Hornets withstood a 3-0 run to continue to hold the lead after a kill by Cobb (12-10). The two traded points until Alabama State went on a 4-0 run to take a 17-14 lead, however, FIU went on a 5-0 run to take the lead at 24-20 before closing out the set.
SET 2 | The two teams traded points to open the set before Alabama State used a kill and a FIU error to take a 4-2 lead. The two teams traded points until FIU scored five of six points to tie the match at 12-all. The Lady Hornets went on a 3-0 run highlighted by a kill from Cobb and a service ace to take a 16-13 lead. Following a point from FIU, the Lady Hornets went on a 3-0 run using a pair of kills and a service ace to take a 19-15 lead. The Panthers closed the set on an 8-0 run to win the set.
SET 3 | Alabama State took an early lead and pushed it to 6-3 after a 3-0 run using a kill from Cobb and a service ace by Brooks. The two teams traded points until Alabama State used back-to-back points to take a 10-7 lead before FIU was able to tie the match at 11-all. FIU scored six of seven points to take a 17-14 lead, before closing out the set.
