MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State opens Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play this weekend in the state of Florida beginning with Florida A&M on Friday, and followed by Bethune-Cookman on Sunday.

The Lady Hornets were picked to finish second in the preseason poll after earning the top seed for the conference tournament last season. Meanwhile, Florida A&M was picked to win the regular season and Bethune-Cookman was picked to finish fourth.

Alabama State and Florida A&M split the two regular season meetings last season before the Rattlers won the rematch in the tournament, while the Lady Hornets won both meetings last season.

Alabama State Notes
- A'Nylah Cobb was named the SWAC Offensive Player of the Week this week after her performance at the Wildcat Classic. She recorded 31 total kills, including 13 each against New Mexico State and Long Beach State.
- The award is the fourth this season for the Lady Hornets from the conference.
- One week after Madison Beasley returned close to her hometown, three student-athletes will be returning to their hometown this week. Cobb and Jada Rhodes are returning to their hometown of Tallahassee (Fla.), while Taila Gaines will be returning to Daytona Beach (Fla.).
- Rhodes is currently ninth at the school in kills with 789 and is tied for 10th with Temperance Chatman all-time in digs with 605.
- Beasley is currently sixth all-time at the school in assists (1760), 16th in digs (487), and 11th in service aces (90). Meanwhile, Emily Brooks is 15th all-time in assists with 654.
Florida A&M Notes
- Florida A&M has won the last two SWAC tournament championships and finished tied atop the regular season standings last season with Alabama State.
- The Rattlers enter the weekend having won their last two matches, including the first sweep of the season in a win over South Carolina State.
- Florida A&M has won eight SWAC Player of the Week awards this season including a pair this week in Brooke Hudson (defensive) and Shelby Chamblin (Newcomer).
- Hudson recorded a game-high 30 digs against The Citadel last week.
- Camila De La Rosa led FAMU with 106 assists and 18 digs last week.
Bethune-Cookman Notes
- The Wildcats enter the weekend looking for their first victory of the season hosting Alabama A&M and Alabama State in consecutive matches.
- Bethune-Cookman and Alabama State have faced one common opponent this season – East Carolina – with both dropping the match, with the Wildcats being swept in the loss.
- Jasmine Moore leads three players with 40-plus kills on the season for Bethune-Cookman with 46 total. She is joined by Mia Delahoussaye and Malina Spence with 45 each.
- The Wildcats were picked to finish in the top half of the conference in the preseason poll.
