Alabama State Tripped Up By Alcorn State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The Alabama State University women's basketball team saw a six-point halftime advantage slip away in a 49-42 loss to Alcorn State University on Saturday inside the Acadome.

Cordasia Harris recorded a double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Hornets (1-14, 1-3). DaKiyah Sanders added nine points, six rebounds and three steals and Solangelei Akridge chipped in as well with three points and three steals.

Harris pulled down six offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Alabama State, grabbing 16 boards and turning them into 11 second chance points.

The Alabama State defense held Alcorn State shooters to only 31.5 percent from the field, including 0 percent from three-point range.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Alabama State started off strong, putting together a 9-8 lead heading into the second quarter. Alabama State got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for four of its nine total points.
  • Alabama State built that first quarter lead to 16-13 before going on a 5-0 run starting at the 5:32 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Harris, to increase its lead to 21-13. The Braves cut into that lead, but the Hornets still enjoyed a 21-15 advantage heading into halftime. Alabama State forced three Alcorn State turnovers in the period and turned them into four points.
  • Alabama State then lost its advantage in the third quarter and trailed the Braves 30-28 entering the fourth. Alabama State played well near the basket, scoring six of its seven points in the paint.
  • A Harris layup with 1:07 to play in the fourth quarter closed Alcorn's lead to 44-42 
  • Alcorn State scored the final five points of the game to claim the 49-42 win.
