HOUSTON, Texas | Cordasia Harris's double-double led the Alabama State University women's basketball team at a 62-55 SWAC win over Texas Southern University at the H&PE Arena on Monday.
The Hornets (2-16, 2-5) had two players score in double figures, led by Harris, who put together a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Solangelei Akridge set career-highs with 15 points and five rebounds along iwth and four assists. DaKiyah Sanders added four points and two steals.
Alabama State grabbed 41 rebounds in Monday's game compared to Texas Southern's 36, led by Harris' 12 boards. The Hornets also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 11 rebounds into eight second chance points.
The Alabama State defense held Texas Southern shooters to just 24.6 percent from the field, including 21.1 percent from three-point range. The Hornets also kept Taniya Lawson to 4-of-14 shooting in the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After jumping out to a 9-7 advantage, Alabama State went on a 5-0 run with 5:01 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Kristian Jackson, to increase its lead to 14-7. Texas Southern then responded to tie things up at 19-19 heading into the second quarter. Alabama State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 19 points.
Texas Southern then took a 32-23 lead before Alabama State responding by going on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from April Hooks, to narrow its deficit to 32-28, a score that would hold until halftime.
Following halftime, Alabama State kept the Tigers from growing their lead before going on a 13-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Harris, to grab a 46-37 lead with 2:43 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Tigers had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Hornets still entered the fourth quarter with a 48-43 edge. Alabama State played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 20 points in the paint.
Alabama State kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Harris' jumper, to grow the lead to 56-45 with 4:31 to go in the contest. The Tigers narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Hornets still cruised the rest of the way for the 62-55 win. Alabama State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring five of its 14 total points.
